I'd miss my Compadres Bailey and my newly adopted Mexican family, but the youthful gypsy blood running through my veins told me it was time. The Mexican peso had been devalued and my landlady wanted to be paid in dollars. "Because it's the same for you, isn't it?" she asked. Well, yes and no. I was paying about $200 per month, and the devaluation would now bring my peso rental equivalency down closer to $100. Saving close to $100 per month would allow me to boost Alberto's wages and help find the most attractive, friendly, and competent housekeeper (in that order) that a few extra pesos would afford. Truth be told, it wasn't merely how Hilda had asked for dollars, or how much more I could afford to budget, but it was the perfect excuse to check out greener pastures. ... |
